The Adige River is the second-largest river of Italy, after Po River. Its total length is 410 km (255 miles). It flows mostly in the northern part of Italy.
The Adige River rises in three small lakes in the Italian Alps north of Bressanone and south of the Brenner Pass that connects Austria and Italy.
First, it flows in a southwesterly direction through Trento and Rovereto, passing about six miles east of Lake Garda. In its lower course, in the Veneto region, it flows typically southeast, passing through the city of Verona and next to Rovigo.
The Adige River empties into the Adriatic Sea five miles south of Chioggia.
The most important tributaries of the Adige are the Noce, Isarco, and Avisio rivers.
Economic importance:
Although Adige River is navigable in its lower course, it is not used extensively for navigation purposes. It serves mainly for irrigation and hydroelectric power.
Tourism:
Adige crosses some important tourists spots in Italy including but not limited to the cities of Trento, Verona, Rovereto and Adria. Also, before entering these cities, it goes past the scenic Brenner Pass in the Alps. In Verona, the Adige is crossed by a superb Roman bridge, the Ponte Pietra.
